Effort Reporting

Faculty effort is the compensated time faculty members spend on University activities including research, instruction, administration, service and clinical activity.

The Federal government requires periodic review and certification that confirms the distribution of salaries for employees who received full or partial compensation and/or are cost shared on sponsored projects. To meet this requirement, UNC Charlotte uses the after-the-fact method of accounting for effort using certified effort reports that represent a “reasonable” reflection of employee effort on a sponsored project(s).

Each effort report summarizes payroll data imported from UNC Charlotte's BANNER accounting system into a web-based Effort Reporting System (Maximus ERS).  Salaries are converted into a percentage of effort and reports are generated for certification..

UNC Charlotte requires that effort for faculty and staff supported by sponsored programs be certified periodically on at least an annual basis.

Effort reports must be certified within eight (8) weeks after the release of reports to campus. Once the effort reports have been certified for a reporting period and the effort reporting period has been closed, revised retroactive salary expense transfer documents may not be initiated without senior level Grants & Contracts Administration approval.
